A full-time journalist for the outdoors press, Wayne
van Zwoll lives in central Washington state with his wife Alice. Over
the past 20 years he has published five books and several hundred articles,
primarily on firearms, optics and big game hunting. His work has appeared
in more than two dozen other magazines, including Sports Afield,
Outdoor Life, and Field & Stream. He also edits the specifications
section of Shooter's Bible. An academic background in natural
resource management helped him in his work as a wildlife control agent
with Washington's Department of Game and as editor for Kansas Wildlife
magazine. Once a contract photographer for the U.S. Forest Service,
he has guided big game hunters in Utah and Wyoming. Wayne served as
one of the first field directors for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation
and is now a professional member of the Boone and Crockett Club. A competitive
shooter, Wayne has won two state smallbore titles. He gives seminars
at sports shows, teaches marksmanship and runs this Wyoming outdoor
skills camp for women. He has conducted Hunter Education courses in
five states. In 1996 he was named Shooting Sports Writer of the Year
by the Outdoor Writers Association of America. Wayne has taught English
and Forestry classes at Utah State University and recently completed
a doctorate there, studying the effects of changes in big game hunting
motive on wildlife policy.
